nullEDGE – Freelancing to get your in on ServiceNow with Mike Roberts

The European mind cannot comprehend that a freelancer can earn >200K$ in their first year without experience.

Mike Roberts shared his freelancing journey in this nullEDGE session and offered some advice for early-career ServiceNow developers who struggle to secure their first job.

Tips

  • Specialise in one small niche: catalog items, Flow Designer, ATF…
  • Build 2-3 polished demos in your PDI and record them in Loom (show, don’t tell).
  • Transition from digital platforms to face-to-face networking. Talk to local and small partners. Ask your network.
  • Use your freelancing small gigs to build your resume.

Would it work in Spain?

This might work in the US, but I find it complicated to apply in Spain. Here, becoming “autónomo” when you have zero experience is complicated.

It means learning technical skills, sales, negotiation, project management, and financial admin simultaneously, while fighting bureaucracy.

My suggestion: employed role → gain solid experience → then freelance if the economics justify the administrative overhead.

Freelancing works better once you have experience: you know what clients need, how to scope work, and what to charge.

Worth watching if you’re exploring options, though. Just make sure it translates to your country.
