nullEDGE – ReleaseOps: Confident QC & Automated releases in ServiceNow with Robert Fedoruk

Watching a presentation by Robert Fedoruk at 8 AM is more effective than having two cups of coffee. He has a lot of energy, and it’s clear he is really excited about ReleaseOps.

This is a new feature in Zurich to manage ServiceNow deployments (Not to be confused with Release Management or Digital Product Release).

Push more stuff, more often, with higher quality

I’d say “shut up and take my money” at this point, but it’s free!

The train metaphor

  • Train → Release
  • Cars → Deployment requests
  • Custom agents → Quality control
  • Cargo → Update sets

If you, your team, or your stakeholders are not ready by the departure time, you can take the next train. But you don’t block the railroad.

A task-based system

It is a task-based system, easier to coordinate all people involved without managing complex Excel files and wasting time chasing people.

If something goes wrong (for example, an update set preview error), a deployment request task is automatically created and assigned to the right person.

Integrations and customisations

There’s also a light integration with change management.

The default playbooks can be customised to match your organisation’s processes.

Extended version

If you want to know more, there’s an extended demo just uploaded to the ServiceNow Dev Program channel!

  • Developers can use a “Promote update set” button to create deployment requests via a Record Producer or add the Update Set to an existing one.
  • Deployment analyser for assessing payloads. It helps you make the content of payloads part of your release or quality control process.
  • Update sets committed through deployment requests are linked to their source task.
  • You can even automate plugin and scoped app installations.
